Synopsis: THE SECRET PLAN is a 30 minute film that was shot over a period of several weeks in the fall of 1996. Filmed in and around Boston, THE SECRET PLAN features music by Jorge Arriagada and songs by Joe Jackson, Traffic, The Band, Fred Astaire, Patsy Cline and Bob Dylan.
The film tells the story of a man hunting for a plan that contains information how to interpret the major stories of the day, notably the C.I.A./contras/crack story but other stories as well including the current crises in Rwanda, Afghanistan and Burma. Mixing documentary footage with material shot on location in Boston, the film blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Repeatedly, the man searching for the plan fabricates a collection of odd characters that materialize before him, offering clues as to the whereabouts of the plan, only to leave as suddenly as they came.
Mr. Muchnik called upon his friends to lend their talents to the production. Local thespian John Porell makes an appearance as the leader of the Massachusetts Coalition for the Reform of Cannabis Laws as does film maker/critic Scott Hamrah in the role of a William Morris agent. Composer Jorge Arriagada's music is used throughout the film. Mr. Arriagada has composed music for over forty feature length films including many by film maker Raul Ruiz.
Mr. Muchnik's own works have been seen on HBO and heard on NPR. His plays have been produced at the Boston Center for the Arts. He has written several screenplays and acted in Raul Ruiz' (The Golden Boat, 1991) which was shown at the New York and Sundance Film Festivals as well as the Toronto Festival of Festivals and the Miami Film Festival.
