Synopsis
A recebt touring retrospective of the films by director Mohsen Makmalbaf, which took place locally at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, introduced American audiences to one of Iran's most popular and controversial artists. His most recent feature, Gabbeh, was initially banned in Iran until successful festival screenings and a string of European openings sparked worldwide interest. This absolutely beautiful tale of love and longing within the vast expanses of nomadic settings, opens in select U.S. Markets.

The film is based on Makhamalbaf's travels to the remote steppes of Southwestern Iran to document the lives of an almost extinct tribe of nomads who, for centuries created special carpets known as "gabbehs." Fascinated by their culture, Gabbeh evolved into a fictional love story which uses the magical carpet as a storytelling device weaving past and present, fantasy and reality.

"Mohsen Makhalbaf is one of the most important filmakers in the world." - Gerald Peary, The Boston Phoenix.
